The Calligrapher holding up his daughter to pick her doll.

Dolls are made by doll merchants, and they are differentiated, as the Ai-Naidari are, by caste and rank. Here we see a small selection of the available dolls, with the highest ranked dolls on the top shelf, and lower ranked ones below, and some special caste dolls on the lower ranks (guardians and priests—the priests all have their eyes painted closed, by custom). Each doll comes with a little backstory (printed behind them on the shelf) and some extra clothes. The very regal doll at the top even comes with a cabinet for those clothing. Doll choice is completely up to the child and is usually considered helpful in discerning what caste-rank the child will eventually be—or serve.
